NIS Kyzylorda Students Develop AI Platform to Translate Kazakh Sign Language into Text and Speech

19 October 2026 14:33

Students of Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Kyzylorda, Aishabibi Erlankyzy and Gainizhamal Berikqyzy, have developed QOLDAU AI, a web-based platform that uses artificial intelligence to recognise sign language gestures and convert them into text and speech in real time. The students conducted the first trial of their project at Special Boarding School No. 6 for children with hearing impairments in Kyzylorda.

The platform requires only a standard webcam and an internet connection. It recognises gestures in Kazakh Sign Language and translates them into text and spoken output, helping people with hearing impairments communicate with others. No additional applications need to be installed.

During the trial, students at the boarding school tested the platform and shared their feedback. Teachers highlighted its practical value, recommended expanding the database of recognised gestures, and noted its potential to support the development of writing skills.

The project is being developed further under the guidance of physics teacher Ainur Kurakbayeva and Madina Rashitova, Deputy Director for Research and Methodological Work at NIS Kyzylorda. Feedback from the trial will help the young developers improve the system to better meet the needs of future users.

The introduction of the new technology was part of a meeting between the two educational institutions. NIS students also organised an art competition entitled “Kazakhstan – My Pride” in celebration of Republic Day. The boarding school students presented watercolour paintings inspired by Kazakhstan’s culture, traditions and landmarks. The winners received awards during a concert programme prepared by the boarding school students.

At the end of the visit, gifts were presented to the boarding school with the support of parents from the Nomad Shanyraq community.
