Akezhan Askar, a student at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Semey, won a silver medal at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2026), held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This year, one of the world’s most prestigious informatics Olympiads brought together more than 300 students from over 90 countries.

The International Olympiad in Informatics is one of the world’s leading subject Olympiads for high school students. Participants compete individually, solving complex algorithmic problems that test their skills in analysis, algorithm and data structure design, programming, and testing. The competition consists of two rounds, with participants given five hours on each competition day to solve three problems.

For Akezhan, this is his second consecutive IOI silver medal. Last year, he also won a silver medal at the Olympiad in Sucre, Bolivia.

At the end of the competition, all four members of the Kazakhstani national team won medals, earning one gold and three silver medals. Kazakhstan placed 10th in the global team standings, marking one of the country’s best results in the history of its participation in the Olympiad.
